Now, I'm not going to claim to fully understand patents myself but based on what I read, it seems like this was put in place now specifically for Legends Z-A's new combat mechanics. It's there to protect that style 1:1 from being copied. Not just any form of summoning things for battle.

So apparently all that talk about the Pokémon Company putting a patent in for summoning monsters was almost entirely bogus. Yes, they did put a patent in place based around capturing and summoning monsters but it only covers direct copy or plagiarism of Pokémon's structure/combat and the code.
