If we place tariffs on consumer goods and China places tariffs on food, the cost of each in both countries goes up as the government exacts a tax ultimately from those who buy food and those who buy consumer goods. 4/5

We produce way more than we need and the world can benefit from our exports. China manufactures consumer goods very efficiently. A free trade economy in which we sell food to China and they sell consumer goods to us makes both countries better off. 3/4

Rather than have each country struggle against inefficiencies to fulfill all their needs, everyone will be better off if we all do what we do best and freely trade for the things we need. For example, the U.S. is great at farming. We know how to do it well and efficiently. 2/4
