the british press devoting any time at all to the beckham family's antics to is a fascinating insight into the psyche of a country that has passed *through* terminal decline and emerged somewhere even worse somehow

in english, "midfielder", if you split the two words, it's "mid" and "fielder" and that's why we need romeo lavia back as soon as possible

Something I got out of reading Clausewitz is considering myself subject to moral forces in the same way I am subject to physical ones. You spend a day in the rain and you’re going to be affected. You watch misery and cruelty all day, you’re going to be affected. The rationale doesn’t change that.

Wanting to keep a tiny anime woman in a jar on your desk seems perfectly normal. Not a red flag at all.

YES!!! People will read "realists" and view that as good advice but Athens lost the war. They lost their hegemony and they lost their democracy. Their leaders were replaced by the Thirty Tyrants. The Melian Dialogue should be a warning to avoid behaving like Athens, not evidence in support of it.

This is basically the view of the world that Plato sets out to refute in the Republic. One of the core questions asked therein is: why do powerful people think the mere fact of them exercising dominion makes it good for them to do so? Sure, you *can* get away with stuff if you're powerful - so what?

people think moby dick is a stern adventure novel heavy on the plot. i can't emphasize how much it's not. it's supergay chaos with 3 plot points. there's an entire chapter that's just a chowder recipe. sometimes it turns into a play. the main character is covered in whale dinension tattoos.

Why do bash “dead-beat” [grahams] for not being there for their [football team] but we never question if the [club] has bad vibes? Or if they’re just unpleasant to be around?

You’ve lost the plot completely when you find yourself having any other reaction than “this is fucking awful” to a terrorist attack. No, I don’t give a shit if certain Bad Victims were Zionists, there’s no world in which somebody opening fire on a beach isn’t just murderous terrorism. Fuck off!
