The whiplash is real. There was a PRO-congestion pricing march in NYC yesterday. Apparently all that we needed to get New Yorkers to support congestion pricing was a Trump attack.

A month into congestion pricing and my bus commute into NYC is consistently 15-20 min faster each way, no matter what time of day I travel. It has given me 40 minutes of my life back. I work in midtown and crossing the street is no longer gridlock.

There's a standard pattern when a city like London or Stockholm adopts congestion pricing: It's initially unpopular b/c drivers view congestion pricing as a tax, but support grows as locals see it reducing traffic and improving urban life. Looks like it's happening in NYC, too -- and quickly.

La idea es súper sencilla: son caminos que surgen sobre el césped porque la gente toma una ruta alternativa a los caminos definidos (normalmente, los desire paths son más directos que los caminos “oficiales”). El ancho del desire path indica su popularidad.

When NYC started congestion pricing last week, we knew the local mainstream press would be out talking to drivers who were against the toll. So we went out and heard from some people who weren’t driving, including advocates who fought for this historic program.

The London experience was similar in the first few days. I could walk across streets that had usually been nose to tail vehicles. But it wore off as drivers factored the charge into their budgets. Today traffic levels are only 10% down on projections of what they might have been without charging.
