When we say that we hope this post is ‘awesome,’ we don’t mean we want it to be expressive of awe or terror. We mean that we hope you like it. This reduction of a word's intensity is called ‘semantic bleaching.’

Etymology of the day: in the expression ‘just deserts’, ‘deserts’ is an old past participle of the French ‘deservir’, meaning ‘deserve’. To get your just deserts is to get what you deserve. ‘Desert’ in this sense is obsolete, which is why lexicographers see ‘just desserts’ popping up everywhere.

When my rheumatoid arthritis became more aggressive, I clung to the idea of still being a ‘walking person’. Letting go of that gave me more freedom than I could have imagined

Someday you will write the book. Most people will not read it. But someone will, and it will change something inside them. Then they will write a book, wholly their own, but slightly indebted to your ideas. And so on. The chain never ends. There are echoes of you at the end of the world.

Having hours to write for the first time in a week always feels like such a gift. I find I’m more productive when constrained by time. This side project is quirky and a weird length. Sometimes play is the best form of work!
