I’m remembering that it was only 80 years ago when the prisoners were released from Auchwitz. It reminds me of my old neighbour who took care of me when I was working full time and studying my masters. He and his lovely wife would invite me over for dinner and send me home with food.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

I live in Australia and am terrified that we are heading towards the US situation ourselves. Even my parents and brother said they wouldn’t comply with lockdowns again if there was another pandemic. I pointed out they saved my life and I’d be dead without them. Literally 0 care factor.

So when it comes to "grow community locally" stuff, here's something non-Disabled folks especially have to figure out how to counter. There is a long-standing pattern where chronically ill people, even those who previously had extensive support networks and community, are abandoned and isolated.

So much this. And the big one that isn’t talked about is how this affects people with a disability. Who already have some of the lowest employment rates and highest poverty rates. I lost count of the times I was told I was too disabled to do a job I was already doing with another company.
