Some thoughts on the Portuguese election last Sunday. 1. The main story here is one of left versus right. The right as a whole scores a major win, getting 2/3 of the MPs (likely sufficient for a constitutional amendment, eg). The left as a whole was decimated.

The parallels to the Swiss social democrats in 2023 are evident: 1) Appeals to young (female) voters with a credible progressive agenda and heavy emphasis on housing 2) Strong results in urban centers 3) Rather young co-leadership 4) Targeted campaigning with clear appeals

Ein Blick auf den Stadt-Land-Gegensatz. Abgebildet für jede Partei ihr nach Bevölkerungsdichte mittlerer Wahlkreis: 50% ihrer Stimmen sind urbaner, 50% ländlicher. AfD im Westen stärker und damit etwas urbaner, BSW ähnlich wie Union (weil Ostdeutsch), Grüne bleiben stark urban, Linke urban wie nie.

Abschließend: Das Thema Zuwanderung dominiert aktuell die Debatte - ein Thema, in dem sich die drei Herausfordererparteien unterscheiden. Dabei kommen jedoch die Unterschiede zwischen den Parteien in der Frage, wie stark ökonomische Ungleichheiten bekämpft oder gar gefördert werden, zu kurz.
