Although not original, the sash windows in the Great Hall do provide some lovely light even on the darkest dingiest days of winter. Added to the building in the 1730s - they replaced medieval windows that were half the size and cut through the wall joists to fit them in. 😳

On 16th January 1941 Maj Gen Tilly DSO MC* GOC 2nd Armd Div died in a crash in Egypt. He was CO 5th Bn RTC in the 30s & Comd 1st Tank Bde just prior to their actions in France in 1940. He was the most senior officer to have died in an operational theatre at that stage. He is buried in Alexandria.

1/3 Wardsend Cemetery was the burial ground from 1857 for St Philip's Church which used to stand on the junction of Infirmary Road and Penistone Road.
