Today the ALA released its 2025 most challenged books list. Across genres and ages, one trend persists: these bans target marginalized voices. Reading about others teaches empathy & promotes understanding; it's time to ask ourselves why that idea is so threatening to those who want to ban books.

It's normal in libraries to see a small number of book challenges by parents & patrons who have concerns about content. Today, however, 92% come from organized groups, including officials and dark money groups like Citizens for a New LA. It's time we reclaim our libraries for the people they serve.

Louisiana will likely torture & kill Jessie Hoffman today. That he had an all-white jury deserves far more attention. The death penalty here is fueled by racism. No white person has been executed in Louisiana for a crime against a Black victim since 1752.
