We are recording students in classes with mobile eye-tracking glasses this semester and it amazes me that even with a camera recording everything they check the stock market, do crosswords, and watch movies.

This means many brilliant and passionate people who would have normally been admitted to a program (or many programs) received zero offers. This had nothing to do with talent or merit. If possible, try not to take the rejection personally. This happens every year and it seems to be getting worse.

I've seen a lot of demoralized posts (and emails) from people who didn't get into grad school this cycle. This was one of the worst cycles I've ever seen due to massive cuts to research funding, financial difficulties at universities, and technological disruptions.
