Statistically speaking, our lounge is still the best place to see Cory's Shearwaters from on Barra. We had 36 south past Brevig in 5 hours this afternoon, a record count for the Outer Hebrides. Also 3 Great Shears, 2 Sooties and c40 Bonxies.

Soft-plumaged Petrel (light morph) off Porthgwarra this eve. 8:24pm. 13th July. Following a prompt txt from Joe Jones at 6:34 from the Lizard, this bird took 1hr 50 to reach Pg. Just five of us connected. The 2nd uk record and 1st for Cornwall. Pics courtesy Mike McKee. Still stunned tbh!

Risso's Dolphins off Berry Head this morning. Gut wrenching decision for the 3 seawatchers on site - Balearic Shearwaters or Risso's Dolphins, which to watch?? Amazingly one or two Risso's were riding the bow wave of a yacht turning into Torbay.

Tuna documented preying on seabirds for first time
Atlantic Bluefin Tuna has been documented preying on seabirds for the very first time. In October 2022, researchers discovered the remains of a Puffin in the stomach of an Atlantic Bluefin Tuna caught some 1.6 km off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The identification of the bird species was confirmed by genetic analysis.

Risso's Dolphins from Berry Head this afternoon. May seems to be a good month to see them as they are probably coming in close to shore to feed on adult Cuttlefish which have come into the shallows to lay eggs and die at this time of year.
