Was very pleased to see alpine clubmoss today Diphasiastrum alpinum above líonán today in Conamara. Have been on look out for it all summer. Have only seen twice before (once in Scotland and once more in Conamara but I somehow lost the latter location since it was on a casual hike :/)

Gymnomitrion crenulatum from two different sites/days in the mám toirce. The red stuff is what I mostly see, and am happy to. The green stuff had me all excited it was something rare but nope still G. crenulatum. Apparently this colouration is uncommon

Would normally say its a squirrel seeing this in a woodland. BUT This is in an isolated woodland complex 20km away from nearest population of reds with treeless landscape between. Anybody able to shed some light?

Hazel under story planting. These multi-stem plants grown from hazelnuts collected locally in 2022 from a hazel woodland that appears on 1890 maps. Much slower growing than nursey ones.

Lowland beech forest in the Forest Reserve Joseph Zwaenepoel in Belgium on a recent visit. Appreciating beech in its native range and great to see so much standing and fallen deadwood. Nice also to see some unfamiliar continental fauna like Roe Deer, Marsh Tit, Nuthatch, and Short-toed treecreeper.

A story of opportunity and pressure! My understanding is that this was a plantation around 15 years ago. It was clearfelled and let naturally regenerate (drains potentially blocked also?) There's wood sorrel on the ground (an old woodland indicator, likely hung on in plantation and spreading again)

This field of rye grass had 3 crops last year, every six weeks during spring/summer. This year: one crop at the beginning of June. It’s barely rained since. Agricultural output this year is going to be very very bad.
