Rewilding in Galway! This field is not being deliberately rewilded. Rather, the farming has ceased and the neighbouring forest is moving in. Abandonment may, or may not, be good for nature. Much better would be if the landowner were getting a payment to ensure that the outcome is good.

Looks can be deceiving Nearly all the trees in this beautiful forest are non-native sycamores. Many forests in Ireland, even outside of plantations, are dominated by non-native species and so their biodiversity is limited.

This forest was a field of pasture only 20 years ago. As time goes on it increases in biodiversity. New species move in and the trees age, some fall over or die. Dead wood brings fungi and invertebrates which strengthen the food chain. #rewilding

These landowners are already doing a lot for nature. West Clare is a particularly treeless landscape so their work is especially important!

This enthusiastic response is despite the fact that currently, rewilding land means giving up any chance of receiving farm subsidies. Can you imagine the huge uptake if farmers had the option of being paid to rewild, just they are to farm or grow tree plantations? Why is this STILL not happening??
