We had a great talk at Green Drinks last night by Kieran Cunnane from Galway Energy Co Operative, who shared insights about how to access renewable energy and make homes more efficient.

Another day creeping up on Rhodo 🪓

Despite sporadic showers, we were quite productive yesterday! We removed rhodo from ~ .6 acres, and we're slowly but sure surely turning the map pink 💪🏽

Today we split up and tackled two different sites. We returned to a previously treated woodland to assess progress and we're happy to see minimal regrowth and the natives bouncing back. However we weren't so happy to see the giant Rhodo growing at the second site! Our work continues...

Y'day was our last visit to coill Gleann dá loch for 2025 which we wrapped up nicely with a few well earned pints and meal 2025 in summary: 2.7ha of Rhodo cleared (6.67 acres) over 12 days with an average of 7 volunteers each outing. Not to mention our follow up work at two other local sites (1/2)

Thanks to everyone who braved the weather to join us tonight! We had a fantastic talk about the future of food and land use in Ireland by Dr. David Styles, Associate Professor in Agri-sustainability at the University of Galway.

Bang! And the dirt is gone! We try to use the dig out method where possible - a few skilled swings of a mattock do wonders! Taking out main root seems to be effective for long term clearance with minimal regrowth. (We do have to use herbicide sometimes too) #RhodoBashing

Another pile of rhodo gone! Rhododendron ponticum is native to Iberia and Caucas region (its actually under pressure in Iberia and people working to save it)! Ireland is thought to have a cultivar "superponticum" introduced in last century or so which is cold resistant, perfect for Irish climate.

A lot of hard work goes into @rhodorangers.bsky.social work done by a lot of others! Licences, landowner liaison, scouting sites, best practice review, organising speakers etc Not to mention costs of travel, tools, insurance etc - all self funded atm! Please share and follow the page!

Cherry Laurel on the march from gardens into woodlands. Crazy that the government has not acted on the Citizen's Assembly's recommendation to ban it for sale (How many years ago was that?) The alternative of Griselinia or Portugese Laurel are not good either. Nothing wrong with Holly, Yew etc
