At the edge of the wood a large charm of Goldfinches - 30/40 birds - were enthusiastically feeding on the immature male catkins of Silver Birch. It was poor light but it's interesting to build up your knowledge of what the birds are feeding on throughout the seasons.

Pleased to get news that the colour-ringed Bar-tailed Godwit I saw on Barra last Friday was ringed on the Dutch island of Griend in Nov '24 and seen there again in August. This is the first Barwit from this scheme to be seen in the Outer Hebrides.

Highlight at Cley this morning was a woodcock in-off the sea, pursued by a marsh harrier. Supporting cast included a very obliging jack snipe and kingfisher, plus three stonechats. A peregrine beat the place up in full attack mode, before flying off and spooking 2000 golden plovers over Blakeney.

So last Rattray one for now. On 20th October this year I found a nightingale at Rattray. Around an 8th for Aberdeenshire and first since 2007. Then as my photos hit the various channels it was identified as an Eastern Nightingale. 2nd for Scotland and 4th for Britain.

Dr. Steve Carver: Toward Meeting Europe's Commitment to 30x30 Targets: a Spatial Modelling Approach
🖥️ Online Talk with Dr. Steve Carver, Geographer and Professor at the University of Leeds on 3 December 2025, organised by the Swiss Wilderness Forum 🏔️🇨🇭 Dr. Steve Carver draws on his decades of experience in wilderness protection and modelling to highlight targets 1-3 of the UN GBF Kunming-Montreal Agreement, exploring what they mean and their implications for wilderness protection and rewilding across continental Europe He points out that the highest quality wilderness can be found primarily in northern latitudes and at high altitudes. In order to meet the Kunming-Montreal target of 30% protected area, he suggests identifying the wildest 30% of land area in each European biogeographical region in order to achieve a more balanced picture of biodiversity. *** MORE INFORMATION 👉 https://environment.leeds.ac.uk/geography/staff/1013/prof-steve-carver 👉 https://www.forum-wildnis.ch

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.
