Couple of local birding patches in Lincs today was excellent. Great White Egret, Bullfinch, Mandarin, Short-eared Owl, Raven and Hen Harrier are new for year. I think I last saw saw Mandarin in Lincs in 1994 or 1995! Beautiful duck.

Fun, fascinating behaviour by the Ravens this morning. Not great photos but I've never seen this behaviour before so I wanted to share! Hope you're not bored of ravens; I'm a little obsessed! Here Chips is having a snow bath and one of them is hanging upside down from a tree!

First twitch of 2026 & it started off difficult.. 3-ish hrs at Burnham-on-Sea for the Kentish Plover. Eventually saw it well near 11am from the Esplanade. 1-1, after I dipped it last Feb. Then the amazing Penduline Tit - again not easy & only saw male in flight. Great (long), day.

Based on people’s responses about the validity of this being a genuine Taiga (some think it is, others say it isn’t), it’s coming off my list. If there is doubt, a bonafide bird is needed to seal it. So 2025 ended on #278, with 6 subspecies.

The Norfolk Taiga Bean Goose has been downgraded to ‘probable’. I photographed both, a Tundra Bean a day earlier than the Taiga, both in Norfolk. To me they are vastly different birds. Tundra Bean photo first. What do people think?

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you had a great birding year in 2025. Thank you to all the dedicated local patch birders, without whom our recorded species would be much lower. Will YOU find our next Eastern Yellow Wagtail (a Lincs first in 2025) in 2026?

1/2. Last time I saw a Green-winged Teal it was nearly 2 years ago at North Point Pools, Norfolk. I saw the vertical white stripe & then it disappeared behind a bit of marsh. Today, at Buckenham Marshes, I managed to see it a lot better… until some idiots started shooting nearby which put them up.

Awake early, as normal… After meeting Steve Webb again yesterday & looking at his 588 birds (!) on his BUBO UK list, I have now added my life and year lists to BUBO. Very surprised to see I am 10th for 2025. I think that just means that a lot of people don’t use it?
