A venture to the very edge of my 10k this anoon for the 3 Russian White-fronted Geese (2ad+1w) at Mere Farm, near Highgate was successful plus picked out an ad Pink-footed & 1 Egyptian amongst 300+ Greylags. 3 Stonechat (2m,1f) around too. 75 for the 10k year @staffsbirdnews.bsky.social #ukbirding

My first White-tailed Eagle of likely truly wild origin in Yorkshire, after seeing descendants of the reintroduction programme in NW Scotland & Isle of Wight birds in Staffordshire & Surrey in 2022. Perhaps it came from continental Europe with the recent wildfowl influx @birdergaz.bsky.social

Two Pacific Divers off Roskilly (12th Jan). These are probably the third & fourth for Cornwall. Photo includes four Great Northern Diver and two Pacific Diver (extreme right and second left). This is the first time that two Pacific’s have actually been seen and photographed together in Cornwall.

Thought I was on for another wild goose chase dip this morning With no Bean Goose at Stanwick, but WhatsApp messages said they were at Islip Hairy drive on the icy roads.Geese being flushed by dogs didn’t help! Finally got decent views of a county ✔️ Tundra Bean and 10 White Fronts #northantsbirds

Sometimes you find rare birds because you're on the lookout for them, other times they pop up when you least expect them! Todays Dusky Warbler suddenly started calling from a bush behind me while on a routine yeartick expedition. I could only manage a few record shots before it seemingly evaporated!

Nice birding belated catch up with glen Kirby around netherton rezza -bottom of netherton hill, a pr of teal and 30+ tufted duck were weather driven birds, teal being very scarce! 2 water rail showed fantastically on the frozen canal! Nuthatch, redwings, green, gs woodpeckers.

I finally went to see the Great-tailed Grackle in Hampshire with @birdergaz.bsky.social A wild bird but undoubtedly ship assisted. A species I've seen in Central America but strange to hear it calling & watch it feeding in freezing temperatures in Britain #12DaysWild @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social

The New Year patch birding got off to a flying start this morning and I managed to see my 3 target species. The White-fronted Geese had increased to 16, the 3 Penduline Tits were very showy and the wintering Cattle Egret was with it's friends.

What a way to start the year on my local patch. Landed on the beach for a few minutes then flew off west.

A respectable 50 species in & around Wolverhampton for day 1 of 2026: 2w Caspian Gull again in West Park at 14:15 @rarebirder.bsky.social also 7 Shoveler & 2 RN Parakeet plus male Peregrine nearby. Pool Hall fishery in am held: Great & 6 L Egret, 26+ Goosander, Lapwing & male Kingfisher #ukbirding

Finally went for the Grackle today with my dad @kevin-clements.bsky.social also saw the Great Grey shrike nearby. Ring necked duck in wiltshire but sadly dog heaven on beach for kentish plover and no show penduline tits.

Ended 2025 with 118 for the 10k circle, down on 122 (2024) & record 126 (2023) but plenty of quality: Marsh Warbler & Whimbrel were 10k ✅’s. Firecrest, Dipper, Caspian Gull, Black Redstart, Hawfinch, Goshawk, Grey Partridge & Corn Bunting all noteworthy for in & around Wolverhampton #ukbirding

Here in the south of Shetland today, the sun rose at 0907 and set at 1500 giving us 5 hours and 53 minutes of daylight. At the summer solstice we'll get nearly 19 hours of daylight! Here's 30 seconds of our #WinterSolstice day enjoying the sight and sounds of Atlantic swells at Quendale Bay.

A classic twitch, with a beautiful duck, a redemption arc, reaching 310 species, a *lot* of mud and an audible pop. The day we saw a Bufflehead but almost didn't make it back for Christmas... thanks for reading! #ukbirding #birds
