The Red List (Vulnerable) scavenger water beetle Hydrochus brevis still present at this heathland pond in the Vale of York, where it's been known since 1949. This species occurs widely as a subfossil in late-glacial to early medieval deposits but is now confined to a small number of ancient fens.

Just seen a pied flycatcher inspecting another new box I just put up this afternoon in the garden! Hovering like a hummingbird near the hole and going in! So agile!!

Sandmartin again. I keep looking at those banks. Starting to hear both of these two more regularly around the garden now.

Oh, interesting! I spotted the pied flycatcher near one of the nest boxes I put up, previously inspected by a great tit! 🤔. It’s here singing loudly there every day, I do wonder if it’s ousted her.

Interestingly, I just found what I suspect is this bathroom moth fly, just underneath where the pied flycatcher was singing, on the stream bank, near the culvert! I suspect this is on his menu as I believe they eat them! 🍽️

Rubbish photo but finally actually saw the pied flycatcher, he’s singing his heart out along the stream in the damsons and willows! ☺️

Today is the 2 year anniversary of when I met the Ravens. They just checked me out from a distance then! Here is some of my fav footage: them courting, feeding each other, barrel rolling and some of their vocalisations. They are the most amazing birds and I am so lucky to have them!

Each year when the forget-me-nots open their blue flowers, I find myself searching for a heart-shaped cluster. I photographed this perfect little heart in my late mother’s garden, a lovely reminder of her. Perhaps you might spot one too this spring, a reminder of someone special?
