Really enjoyed tonight's Digging for Britain! 👍🙂 Sanctuaries on cliffs (1) Barry Cunliffe has said promontory 'forts' MAY not all be defensive (2) this 'persistent' place on Malta I happened across a few years back on hols. Fascinating.

Come hell & high water I am shoehorning this Livy quote into my WIP. It's too delicious. "The year was marred by omnious signs, fires blazed in the sky, there was a violent earthquake & a cow talked - there was a rumour that a cow had talked the previous year but nobody believed it"

Recent photos up Sidbury Hill hillfort on the Salisbury Plain Training Area. The last 2 show clearly the Bronze Age "double linear" earthwork meeting the NW corner of it.

Stark and otherworldly - sunset at Mitchell’s Fold, the Bronze Age stone circle on Stapeley Hill. I got this shot at the tail end of a blizzard, when the sky took on a golden glow that made a spectacular contrast with the snow-covered landscape. It was every bit as cold as it looks.

157 years ago, on the 9th of December 1868, the world's first traffic lights were installed outside the Palace of Westminster in London. It used semaphore arms during the day and green/red gas lamps at night. It had to be operated by a constable. It exploded on January 2nd 1869.

Easy of access, the shapely standing stones at Penrhosfeilu (almost) frame the peak of Mynydd Twr if you look NNW. We stopped by after completing the coast path of the W side of Anglesey last month (recommended!).

The Longstone. Mottistone Down. The stones are all that remain of a long barrow. The Long Stone is thought to have been used as a meeting place during the Saxon period and Mottistone – is a corruption of 'moot stone'.
