None of this is new. All of this is recession behavior. Everyone always tries to save themselves out of s recession and it never works. What’s unique is how much of this was driven by their own behavior and not macro shifts.

There is something that a lot of people mistake: since the pandemic spending high, which ended mid-2022, a lot of companies shifted to focus on gross margin and not revenue as a barometer. That was a pretty swift shift in philosophy.

Every single one of these outcomes was predicted in November 2022 but the allure of increasing gross profit by cutting bottom line was too irresistible.

There have been situations where I have directly asked executives, “what about this technology makes you think this is possible” and none have ever given an answer, let alone one that makes sense. This wave was driven entirely by FOMO and CEOs who golf with each other gassing each other up.

One thing I want to make clear is that every single executive in this position has been told by a knowledgeable engineer that AI cannot replace these jobs and any attempt to make it do so will be an expensive disaster and that engineer was ignored because executives only listen to each other.
