it's crazy how production of music for FM soundchips for limitation rather than stylistic reasons went on well past the late 90s. lots of old phones, esp in east asia, had yamaha MA soundchips so there were FM ringtones being made in the early 2010s

whenever i make pre-2010s styled EDM music i always feel like such a boomer tbh. admittedly it's more in my comfort zone and tastes

i feel like it's not bad to compare music to other things like "this track has [x] vibes" but the bar should be high enough that there's multiple things in the track that evoke it (possibly even inspired by it). rather than "upbeat rock = sonic" or "dj scratch = jet set radio"
