many of you are too zygotic to remember when, for a solid several years, the only high quality upload of the Azumanga Daioh OP on youtube had anti-vax swine flu warnings edited into it

Hi. My little buddy Baxter invited me to share some space on his blog and I wrote an overwrought emotional essay about my favorite Japanese media experience of 2025. Lots of good writing and fun perspectives in here. His site is one of my favorite things going, so I was happy to contribute. 💜

A little new year's gift for you: I made a primer on shibuya-kei. 35 albums and a short essay with some context on the signature sound of Japan's trendiest district. Tried to recommend a good mix of classics and personal favorites.

Hey girls. It's my birthday, it's new year's eve, but most importantly: it's buddy list day. For the fourth time, here's my annual tradition where I invite my friends to take up some space on my newsletter and talk about how they spent their year. Thanks for reading. 💜

wish it wasn't so hard to get out of a city you absolutely hate living in when your financial situation is so dire. it's easy to feel like your life is just over when you've been trapped in the same muck for so long. I don't know what to do with myself.

Thinking about this cool detail from one of my favorite games, 13 Sentinels. It does a lot to make the '80s Japan setting feel faithful, including styling the in-game idol Miyuki Inaba after the real world Minako Honda. Her "Seaside Vacation" LP is a visual reference to the 1985 album M'Syndrome!!

I keep getting glimpses of the discourse about that girl that made the bad magical girl video essay, and I have to say: it's really weird that thousands of people are dogpiling her into oblivion. This video would have been seen by maybe 50 people maximum had someone not made a viral tweet about it.

love it when I'm downloading an anime torrent that's so old the description says "files are compatible with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360." also, shoutout to the absolute freaks that were watching vintage hentai OVAs from the 90s on PS3 lol

D'Angelo wrote songs for people that loved with their entire heart; he had songs for the brokenhearted; for people afraid to try again; and for those ready to overcome their fears. fortunately and unfortunately, I can relate to all of them.

I'm just in total disbelief that D'Angelo passed away. Not even sure what to say. He made three perfect albums. Wrote, produced, and played on tons of classics. He still had more to give and left us way too soon. RIP.
