Lisbon accent incoming: maneira is spelled with an e in the diphthong & pronounced that way in most dialects of Portuguese, but in LX the e component of that diphthong has shifted to an unstressed a sound (a ironia de haver uma gralha minha no post original não me passa despercebida)

Portuguese has a fun shorthand for "if and only if" (se e somente se) that comes up in academic writing a lot: sse, which my mind's voice reads with an exaggeratedly long s sound

The verb 'must' looks a lot like German 'musste' and Dutch 'moest'. But wait a minute: those mean "had to", not "have to". They're past tense forms. Well, 'must' used to be a past tense too! It ditched its present tense, which would've become *moot if it had survived. Here's the story of 'must':
