The iconic multi storey bike parking on top of the water at Amsterdam Centraal now largely demolished. No longer needed as replaced by a 7,000 capacity underground bike parking garage in front of the station, a 4,000 capacity one at the back and a 8,500 one under construction underneath the station

This is what happens when unqualified people are allowed to fulfill something on an engineering checklist. Do we let ignorant people design and install car parking? No. So we have to stop doing it with bike parking. Speak up, make friction for your leaders that allow this ridiculousness.

One thing I admire about the Dutch and the Netherlands 🇳🇱 is that many of their elected officials cycle for transportation. To them, it's unremarkable, but to me, it's inspirational.

Cycle infrastructure in the Netherlands. The cycleway continues across the side road, clearly signalling that drivers must give way. At the roundabout, both the cycleway and pedestrian crossings have priority, so motorists yield again. Simple design, clear rules, safer streets.

In the Netherlands, cycling and public transport aren’t competitors—they’re teammates. Invest in one, and the other gets stronger. Nowhere is this clearer than at railway stations, where every design decision sharpens the bike infrastructure network and makes the door-to-door journey even smoother.

A fietsstraat in the Netherlands, where cyclists have priority and cars are guests. Important to reiterate that this isn’t just a “cyclists have priority” sign you can slap on any street - they’re only used on access roads with very low car traffic, usually only just for residents and access.

People will continue to cycle in the rain if you provide the infrastructure to make it safe and comfortable for them to do so. The greenery alongside cuts the risk of flooding, as well as improving the look of the street.

I visited the far off lands of “The Seattle Center” today to see these fabled “retractable bollards.” 🛫🌎🌍🛬 A worker named Ralph who has been there for 25 years said they work great 👍. You can get through with a keycard or call box. Perhaps someday we’ll import this exotic solution to Pike Place 💡
