So is the issue here the design of bus stop bypasses?

I love research, especially in cycling infrastructure. But if a project in 2025 still asks whether paint alone makes roads safe for cyclists, amid cars going 100 km/h and trucks or buses 80 km/h, it’s a waste of time, money.

Most of these 1500+ OV-fiets bikes at Utrecht Centraal are returned at night. They'll ALL be checked out again tomorrow. Because of high demand, OV-fiets are only available to people who are registered transit users. *Note the person walking in the background toward a train station entrance.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

My latest October Rides post & video follow the return trip from Houten to Utrecht — shorter than the outbound via Nieuwegein. Not part of a numbered cycle route, yet a fine example of excellent “ordinary” Dutch cycling infrastructure.

The goal of good infrastructure is freedom from fear. At 6 months pregnant, my wife can ride because this physically separated path eliminates the threat of motorists. ​This is what women in advocacy fight for, not just paint, but genuinely safe, forgiving spaces that enable true mobility choice.

The elongated roundabout is now practically ready. Lots of finishing touches to be done. But already such a difference with the before situation.

Normally I'd be really reluctant to try and carry a tray of coffees or a pizza and cycle one handed. But in Amsterdam, with a comfortable upright bike and safe, smooth infrastructure with minimal bumps and stopping/starting, it's easy even for a low skill rider like me.

50 years ago today, the Dutch Cyclists’ Union was founded in Utrecht. For half a century they’ve been working to make cycling more pleasant and safe, with now 33K members and 1500 active volunteers all over the Netherlands. Creating ‘100% Cycling Happiness’ as the ultimate goal. 🥳 💪 🚲

The key design principle here is social safety, achieved through natural surveillance. ​Because the underpass is short/open, people can see all the way through, and others can see in. This prevents the isolation and blind spots that make traditional underpasses a magnet for anti-social behavior.
