Of the many many lies that the MAGA & MAHA activist Jay Bhattacharya has spewed—a guy who has been Trump & RFK Jr’s most loyal ally—one of the most ridiculous lies is that he “stays out of politics” He’s Guest Speaker at CPAC, the annual gathering of conservative activists He is “apolitical” lol!

It's long past time to stop indulging people who think you can meaningfully defend science without also defending democracy and academic freedom and opposing authoritarianism. It's the same fight, otherwise all you're defending is your own status.

Jesus Ochoa and Raymundo Gutierrez are named as the murderers of Alex Pretti. Both with enough experience that the excuse of a new agent panicking won’t fly. These guys are supposedly elite (one was on a SWAT team). Yet they pumped 10 bullets into a man they had just disarmed. Justice will come.

If I were a blue state governor, I’d be looking into adding a bunch of tenure lines at my state schools. I know that seems like “kick ‘em when they’re down,” but it’s more like “let academics who can escape to where they can do real work.” Builds up your own schools AND protect US academic output.

Literally the authoritarian playbook: 1. Call your opponents terrorists. 2. Deploy state power against them. There's nothing subtle or confusing or complex about what's happening. The *outcome* is uncertain but the authoritarianism is right out in the open.
