Does your local grocery store look like this? If not, itโs probably because: 1) zoning created large distances between housing & stores. 2) the streets between housing & stores are unsafe for biking. 3) there isnโt any/enough bike parking 1/2

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strรธget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued โno cars means no business,โ but the street has been a massive retail success, the cityโs busiest shopping street.

Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced. Bike-lanes mean business.

Zambesi Ponsonby Rd gone. Wixi P Rd also closed. Strange as there are no bike lanes, street upgrades, nor CRL works on P Rd. No cones! Nothing but endless cars and parking - Zambesi still has its city store, where we are told it is โimpossibleโ to drive and park, and therefore shop. Go figure?

remember if you see a headline about the cost of a pedestrian crossing in the New Zealand news it's always a good rule of thumb to reduce the figure in your head by a factor of 5 to 15, stay safe out there everyone

For most of my friends who have little kids, the #1 neighborhood concern is speeding drivers and unsafe streets. Mobilizing families with little kids should be priority #1 for bike/ped advocacy groups. Harder for politicians to ignore families with kids than stereotypical young, fearless cyclists

We build vehicles that weigh 9000 pounds with 1000HP, can go 0-60mph in 3 seconds and market them recklessly. We then ask people to wear construction vests to cross the street. This is all so beyond absurd and it's truly incredible that we've normalized this.

1/5 Auckland's network of cycle facilities is nearly 800 kilometres! Or is it? If we peel back some of the layers, we can remove facilities that do little to encourage cycling, don't protect people on bikes or require the mixing of multiple modes.
