Reports have been received that the event was felt in Kinloch Rannoch, Aberfeldy and Pitlochry. It has been described as: "heavy rumbling, as if a big truck were going past", "a deep rumbling" and that residents "felt the house shake."

On February 3, 1931, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Hawke’s Bay, causing a mass loss of life & leaving thousands injured. The earthquake struck at 10.47am, leading to the loss of 256 lives - 161 in Napier, 93 in Hastings & two in Wairoa. We remember this event 95 years ago today.

A fast moving coronal mass ejection (CME) means the northern lights may be visible overnight, and perhaps on Tuesday night too The arrival time of the CME is uncertain, but aurora sightings are possible in northern Britain and perhaps in southern areas depending on cloud cover.

The EQ faults (& scarp) are drowned by the current high stand. Nearby Sado Island shares similar deformation record and is flanked by a similar nearshore scarp. It is the potential location of a large fault system initially suggested by Ota Yoko in 1992 (she was 🎯). 2/3

Well separated SE & NW epicenter clusters, and change from ~strike-slip in SE to ~thrust in NW in USGS finite-fault & moment tensors, suggests double-event rupture. Or smooth, single rupture, with largest slip between the two clusters, on a curved fault, as suggested by @berndandeweg.bsky.social.

Focal mechanisms were mainly strike-slip or reverse faulting, consistent with shallow crustal faults in the region. The mainshock is shown as reverse faulting, but the entire rupture was much more complex than this. 16/

Before the earthquake there was regular seismicity in the region with ~700 earthquakes recorded in the previous year. In the first year post-Kaikōura, more than 18 000 aftershocks were recorded, six with M 6+ (orange stars). 15/

Among the faults that ruptured were several offshore faults which caused a tsunami along the NE coast of the South Island with a run-up of up to 6.9 m. The Kaikōura tide gauge recorded a tsunami with a max amplitude of ~2 m and peak-to-trough of ~3 m. 12/

It was felt throughout the country with intensities exceeding MM 8. The rupture lasted nearly 2 minutes along approximately 180 km on the NE coast. It was the most complex earthquake ever recorded with up to 25 faults rupturing and up to 12 m of fault movement. 11/

The largest earthquake in the region was the 2016 M 7.8 Kaikōura earthquake. This earthquake, along with the 2009 M 7.8 Dusky Sound, Fiordland earthquake, was the largest earthquake in New Zealand since the 1855 M 8.2 Wairarapa earthquake www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/s.... 10/

The 1848 M 7.4 Marlborough earthquake may have occurred on the Awatere Fault and caused significant damage with intensities up to MM 10 and three casualties. It was felt as far as East Cape and Taranaki www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/s.... 7/

In the last 200 years there have been 20 earthquakes with M 6+, six being aftershocks to the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake. There have been three other M 7+ earthquakes since 1848 that have significantly impacted the region. 6/

Focal mechanisms for shallow crustal earthquakes are mostly a mixture of strike-slip and reverse faulting, while deeper earthquakes further inland are mostly normal or oblique faulting and likely associated with subduction or below the crust. 5/

In the last 20 years there have been more than 3 000 earthquakes with M 3+. Many of these are aftershocks to the 2016 M 7.8 Kaikōura earthquake (more on this later in the thread); however, in the 11 years prior there were still more than 600 M 3+ earthquakes. 4/

In the past two years GeoNet has located more than 1 100 earthquakes in the region with depths ranging from shallow crustal earthquakes to more than 350 km. The largest was M 5.1 in March 2025. 3/

It’s at the southern end of the Hikurangi subduction zone where the Pacific Plate is subducting beneath the Australian Plate. As a result, the region is tectonically complex with high seismicity and regular large earthquakes. There are many smaller communities, but no major population centres. 2/

The Kaikōura-North Canterbury region is a mountainous region in the northeast part of the South Island. The Alpine Fault splays into the Marlborough Fault System, including the Awatere, Clarence, and Hope Faults. These are all high slip rate faults capable of M 7+ earthquakes. 1/ 🧪

Preliminary NLL-SC relocation of M7 Dec 6 #Alaska #Yukon Hubbard Glacier #earthquakes and seismicity since 2020. Hubbard events fall in void in earlier seismicity, show clear SE-NW trend, and suggest main rupture was ~vertical (strike-slip?) at SE and complex or dipping (toward NE??) to the NW.
