Taking a look at Båth’s Law, which says the biggest aftershock is usually ~1.2 magnitudes smaller than the mainshock. For the M8.8 mainshock that's roughly M7.6 for the biggest expected aftershock - so this M7.8 aftershock is huge, yet still within the expected range. 🧪⚒️ #geology

🧪⚒️ Today's Kamchatka M7.8 ticks all the boxes for being an aftershock of July's M8.8: 1. In the same area. 2. Smaller. 3. Activity in that area hadn't returned to pre-M8.8 levels. Aftershocks a magnitude unit below the mainshock are normal. For a huge mainshock, aftershocks can also be really big!

Crazy (horizontal) runup from the large landslide into Tracy Arm fjord, SE Alaska. This is 20 km out the fjord and the wave reached up to 400 m into this side valley. notice how the vegetation was only wetted for the most part (pixels still red) and only the mouth of the river is destroyed.

It has been a busy couple of days! There was a large landslide and tsunami in SE Alaska, in Tracy Arm, Sunday morning. Luckily, no injuries or casualties were reported. This region is outside of our current landslide coverage, but we were able to get a quick location after hearing about the event. 🧵

The Alaska Earthquake Center has posted updates about the 10 August 2025 landslide. The location of this major failure has now been identified. The M6.1 shallow #earthquake near Bigadic, Turkey, occurred on a normal fault system, possibly the Sindirgi-Sincanli Fault Zone. A similar event occurred near Simav in 2011 and generated significant damage around the epicenter. ⚒️🧪

A colleague noticed this Facebook post about a massive rockfall in the Blue Mountains, so I looked at the overnight records to see if it was visible. The closest station was 30km away, and a spike in the spectrogram at 3:05am had me check other nearby stations, which all rumbled for about a minute.

Update on the #Rialto #earthquake sequence in California. Based on the alignment of the events, it now appears that they are occurring on a right lateral strike slip fault aligned with the San Jacinto Fault System. Two other little current sequences: near Lytle Creek to the North & Ontario South.🧪⚒️

A superb example of a normal faulting earthquake at the top of a subducting slab. Similar intraslab earthquakes have proved severely damaging around the world, such as the devastating 1939 Chillán earthquake in Chile or 2017 Chiapas in Mexico. This hazard exists in every subduction zone globally
