Reykjavík weather update: was supposed to snow yesterday for the 1st time this YEAR, but the storm bypassed the entire southwest. Our total precip. levels have been 25% of average. It's so dry, cars are accumulating layers of dust not frost, and the city is urging all who can to work from home.

Today in Christian tradition is Ash Wednesday. Usually a solemn holy day after the gluttonous festivities of previous days. Iceland, however, is not done happily celebrating. Öskudagur is a day where children dress in costume, go around town to visit businesses and sing for candy. #iceland #culture

Jæja krakkar, it's #storytime This is the first #northernlights photo from my front balcony in almost year. Why the celebration, you ask. Well, it took a missing roof, changing neighbor allegiances, light knife crime, and tabloid stories about my broken nose to get here, so I'd say it's deserved.

Our black sand beaches (made of basalt sand, gravel, and cobbles) are side-eyeing this post :) In geology, sand is about size, not material. (For example, I did my master's thesis on oolitic sands, which are the quintessential soft white sand of tropical locales made of calcium carbonate)

In exciting Iceland news that not many other people will understand or celebrate haha, our Men's Handball team is into the semi-finals for only the third time ever in the Euros. We're a tiny nation, so we get excited when we score big on the international stage. Áfram Ísland! #handball #iceland

Kilauea erupted again yesterday in a fierce display. In only the 2nd time in 40 years, park officials closed the area due to the intensity. Fountains were officially recorded at 500 m high, grapefruit size tephra were being ejected, and tephra fall was measured up to 20 miles away. #volcano #hawaii
