Dyrhólaey looking wonderfully atmospheric yesterday. The bright green lagoon is a striking contrast to the surrounding tephra and basalt sands. Even with Reynisfjara barely visible through the fog, the immense tectonic and erosional forces that shape this coast still shine through. #iceland

Led some wonderful ladies on a bespoke puffin side quest today to Dyrhólaey, Iceland. They're wildlife photographers and had just come from a puma trek in Chile. They said I got the winning shot of the day: a poor puffin having a projectile poo right off the side of a cliff 💩🫣 High praise, indeed!

Record breaking eruptive episode 48 started about two hours ago at Kilauea in Hawaii. This is the most eruption events in an eruptive series recorded at this volcano. Lava fountains are at 650 ft (200 m) and tephra is falling in places. A friend is on-site and she sent me a photo from a cool angle.

It's been an incredibly shaky 24+ hours here in Southwest Iceland. I've felt all three bigger earthquakes here in Reykjavik; and the big one at M4.5, I even *heard* it coming. Experts are saying that this is normal strain resulting from crustal tension that commonly occurs at plate boundaries.

Alert! The lupine are now blooming! Lupine at sea level here in south-southwest Iceland started blooming this week. That means full bloom will be in two-three weeks and last for about six weeks. So if alpine flower photography is your jam, now/soon is the time to pop over and snap away. 🪻

Lava fountaining Episode 45 at Kilauea, Hawaii happening now. Preliminary bubbling was going on for a day and official fountains were declared starting overnight. Max fountain height was around 700 m (smaller than usual). If you like lava, tune into the live cams. #kilauea #volcano #science

The other avian harbinger of spring has made its way to Icelandic shores, right on time. The puffin was spotted in two localities last week, Grímsey (north) and Borgarfjarðar eystri (east). It will take them a bit longer to arrive in the south & west. Sea clowns are here! #iceland #birdwatching

One of the big news stories here in Iceland last week is of a newspaper publishing an obituary of a man who turned out not to be dead. The police cited "ongoing bullying" and two women were arrested. The paper apologized and had to fight back on claims they DIDN'T CALL THE DECEASED TO CONFIRM.
