Found out tonight (thanks to @paradiseregaind.bsky.social!) that Origin Systems put out a screensaver pack in 1993 for Windows 3.0/3.1. As a Wing Commander fan since the first game, I definitely wanted to check out the WC commander stuff that comes with it, and yeah, pretty nifty.

Ultima IV. Originally for the Apple ][+ but ported everywhere in it's day. There's even a version on the NES.

It didn’t occur to me until recent years that while U2 and 3 have runic on the maps, there is no key until Ultima 4! HOWEVER… if you did get 2 first, and guess that the continent names match Earth’s (they do, of course) you can translate almost everything on U3’s map and infer the rest.

If we “bundle”, seems like the “First Age of Darkness” 1-3 is a good set. Ultima IV deserves a full re-exploration of its own… I think.
