We are also below the EU average. With only the former Eastern European bloc countries dragging down the average. All comparable EU economies have much higher levels of State Pension.

The elderly & disabled might not have a mortgage but they DO spend money. They're not economically inactive. They still pay for food, clothing, gas, electricity, water, TV licence, council tax, carers etc.

The state pension in this country is an utter disgrace. Makes you wonder what the bloody point of working for 40 years even is.

The assumption is that pensioners need less to live on. Why? They shop at the same shops, use the same electricity/gas. They dont get over 60's reductions on this stuff. Pensioners get less than the minimum wage to pay for it all. It's ageism. They're second class citizens.

Also, if you receive a meagre work pension the increase is all paid in tax due to the permanent freeze of the personal allowance. The net result is actually a decrease. I approve of income tax, but the level at which it is paid is too low. Rich pensioners? Two of us live on less than £20,000 pa.
