hardly anyone will watch Starmer's appearance at Labour conference today but it was probably the best speech he's ever given he clearly signposted what he stands for - a diverse, tolerant, decent Britain - and how be believes progressives are in an existential fight with the populist right

Mixed messages all over the place. You can’t say on one hand, that immigrants aren’t to be trusted by saying, you’ll have to wait ten years etc to earn the right to be here and then say, immigrants are important in building this nation. Who in government thinks this is a good political strategy?

The politics, the PR, the rhetoric of this government, is woeful.

I think Jonathan is being too polite: this policy is straightforwardly stupid. Other countries will make attractive offers that encourage hard-working, capable, and interesting people to choose them over us, and the UK will be worse off for it. And for what?

Apart from the unnecessary hardship this will inflict on individuals, this will be bad for integration and social cohesion, bad for the economy, and will increase irregular migration. [And, as @robfordmancs.bsky.social has shown, it's hugely unpopular and out of step with the British public]

You know when Savile did that now infamous documentary with Louis Theroux and he was basically admitting in broad daylight that he was a pedophile? Well this is what Farage is doing when he tells Matt Frei that the Russians are bankrolling him. He’s telling the truth for once.

Dear Labour, people aren’t leaning towards the Greens because they don’t know what the Greens are, but because they see what you, Labour, are doing. The best way to stop them going to the Greens, is to have more left wing, less xenophobic, less stupid policies. Attacking the Greens doesn’t help.

The Russians have bankrolled Farage. I wonder if he’ll ever be truly exposed or will the media just concentrate on a bit of land for donkeys or a few grand in stamp duty missed?

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?

The ten year policy in particular is abysmal, as is the mandatory volunteering idea, which has the additional benefit of being absurd. You can imagine them thinking they're bring terribly clever and mapping a middle way. I suspect it'll just make everyone hate them.

These are some of the most extreme restrictions on immigration in years. We're told to see them as benign because they're less bad than Farage's far-right extremism. But they are still terrible.

There is a key moral distinction between immigration policy on new arrivals, no matter how draconian, and on people who have already been granted status, on set conditions. It is about being a country that keeps its word. If we're not that, we might as well fucking give up now.
