This gar decoy was a gift from a friend who knows I would appreciate it! Decoys are used to attract fish during winter spearfishing. #GarWeek

Anyways! I drew my favorite longnose gar at my local aquarium for #GarWeek

It's Gar Week! Alligator Gar are Illinois' largest fish and due to overfishing and a lack of public knowledge were functionally extinct by 1966. However, in the last few years, we have been reintroducing them! As a resident of a river town, these fish are integral to the ecosystem. Also super cool!

Harmless to humans? It's so beautiful I might die! The gars are among my favorite fishes.

Alligator #gar are an incredible fish, and one of the largest freshwater fish in North America- reaching over 6 feet long and weighing over 100 pounds. They may even reach 8+ feet and 300+ pounds! This skull was photographed by @nerdrvt.bsky.social on a BTS tour of NEAQ several years ago. #GarWeek

The trip culminated in DIY alligator gar day where a “short stop” turned into an all-day pursuit of gar in canals. After running out of food & water we landed this gar on an artificial lure. One of my favorite catches ever. #GarWeek
