Truly, being mad at pull-to-publish when AI books threaten to flood the market is quite the move. (And to put my cards on the table, I am a fanfic writer hoping to publish original fiction rather than altered fanfic, so I have a dog in the fight but not quite in that way.)

I think it's awesome that people express themselves in fanfic. And I think it's awesome that these stories become so beloved they go through traditional publishing. Like writing fic was such a way for me to share my passion, but also improve my writing by having readers who share that passion.

Fanfic is inherently anti-capitalist bc it’s just people creating together for joy, but when something comes out of it and goes mainstream, the way I see it is more a triumph of the community, like “look what WE created together, in our beautiful hive mind of defiance and resistance.” WE did that.

This week has been such a shitshow, both professionally and personally, that I just wrote two sentences and am tearing up because my words feel so empty right now and it feels so difficult to even get them on the (virtual) page.
