I started teaching in the 1990s. My students did quite a bit better when they still had to write by hand, did not all have cell phones, and there was no such thing as social media. I’m not saying these things are bad, but that screens and dependence on tech are not what we need in our schools.

Sweden isnt abandoning all use of tech in school - I knew that without reading the article explaining it.

Nope. By 3rd grade, kids should be reading independently. The saying is k-2, learn to read; 3+ read to learn.

It’s being used wrong. This is my 36th year in K12 education. I have never seen so much valueless screen time. It’s nearly all consumption. Kids hate learning from software. There should still be tech classes, but tech should not overwhelm all classes.

Handwriting builds neural pathways tech can't replicate. My kids journal daily: sharper focus, better retention. Reading physical books forces deep comprehension over skimming. Schools that prioritize this create thinkers who outlast trends.

Swedish parent here. I call BS on this. They have screens and computers in school. What they did recently which I do appreciate is to disallow personal mobiles at school grounds.

My most right-wing take is that people like this need to be made an example of. I don't mean they should receive any additional punishment beyond the scope of the law, but elected leaders need to point to this and say, "This sort of behavior is not acceptable and will be treated as such."

Today is my birthday. For my birthday I'm reading about the descent of America as the grotesqueries become more solidified and our nation becomes more irrelevant. To say it's depressing is an understatement.

My husband and I were talking about this crap as usual, because it's all a Big Deal™ and he concluded it's just a Grudge-ocracy. And that's it: there's no policy other than personal grudges.
