For each of my open-source packages, I create a free tool that serves as a testing environment for the package in a real app setting and provides examples of how to use the package. For example, with my spf-validator Python package, I created my validatespf.com tool.

Side projects still open more doors than traditional applications in data roles. The trick: build small, interesting things that signal skills and make your work discoverable. Especially relevant given the current job market.
