Start using your public libraries. ACTIVELY REQUEST books by marginalized communities so libraries know the demand & can buy them. Use your NOTIFY ME tags in Libby. CHECK OUT books (electronic and physical) by marginalized authors. Circulation numbers and holds are critical for us.

i don’t think people on bluesky understand the severity of this situation. i woke up to literally hundreds of texts from friends and family thinking about either moving back home to india or applying to other countries for jobs. this includes me.

The 100K fee for H-1B visas (yearly!) is reported as a hit on tech -- but it is a hit on universities. It will make it impossible for us to hire foreign visitors, or foreign scholars into tenure track positions--I think almost 40% of H-1Bs go to universities and university hospitals.

This is now over. No academics will come on H1-B visas anymore.

Some small, wealthy private college will eventually market a bespoke chatbot & mobile phone free academic environment, likely paired with a conservative GenEd curriculum (classical education, or the like). It will take off like wildfire. They will leap up the rankings. It’s just a matter of time.

We must de-risk learning. The downsides of not knowing should be liberating, not punitive. Not knowing is the foundation for investigation into the unknown. Without creating safe spaces for students to be wrong and experience dissonance, we create little bullshit machines that run on meatware.
