The first public release of GrapheneOS Speech Services is now available in our App Store. After installing it, it can be activated as a text-to-speech service by tapping it in Settings > System > Language & region > Speech > Text-to-speech output > Preferred engine and approving it in the dialog.

A fresh install of GrapheneOS has far lower idle power usage than the stock Pixel OS. Power usage while active is comparable. Making a similar setup to the stock Pixel OS by installing sandboxed Google Play and a couple dozen apps doing a bit of background work will result in similar battery life.

Apple and Google are gradually expanding their use of hardware-based attestation. They're convincing a growing number of services to adopt it. Google's Play Integrity API and Apple's App Attest API are very similar. Apple brought it to the web via Privacy Pass, which Google intends on doing too.

CVE-2026-0073 is a Critical severity Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability included as the only vulnerability fixed in the May 2026 Android Security Bulletin. GrapheneOS first shipped the patch in our 2026030501 security preview release on March 5th. It also isn't nearly as severe as it sounds.

GrapheneOS isn't vulnerable to the 3 recently disclosed Linux kernel vulnerabilities named Copy Fail, Copy Fail 2 and Dirty Frag. Current Android Open Source Project SELinux policies block exploiting all 3 bugs. Standard AOSP GKI kernel configuration also has 2/3 of the vulnerable features disabled.

iPhones are far more private and secure than these products. A lot more info about the lack of privacy and security of Murena products largely applicable to most niche smartphones marketed as private: discuss.grapheneos.org/d/24134-devi... That includes links to coverage by 3rd party experts.

A company being based in Europe doesn't make it ethical or private. Each of those 3 companies misleads users about the products they're selling. Each has engaged in years of spreading misinformation about legitimate open source privacy projects because people keep questioning what they're selling.

The largely closed source SailfishOS drastically reduces privacy, security and usability compared to the open source Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It has a very incomplete Android app compatibility layer able to run some Android apps while losing app sandboxing and other important protections.

SailfishOS is largely closed source other than components they didn't make. Despite that, Russia's government has a fork called Aurora OS due to their 8 year partnership which started in 2015 which was 1 year after Russia invaded Ukraine and was heavily sanctioned. That's hardly a pro-Europe option.

Privacy and security of computing devices are nowhere near good enough to protect regularly people. Jolla, Volla and Murena are making privacy and security far worse than the industry standard of an iPhone. It's the wrong direction. None of those do the bare minimum. bsky.app/profile/grap...

Moving from an iPhone to a device from Jolla, Volla or Murena is a massive downgrade for privacy and security. You're recommending using devices failing to provide crucial standard privacy/security patches and protections. Devices lagging months to even years behind upstream patches aren't safe.

GrapheneOS is immune to the Copy Fail vulnerability due to the deep integration of SELinux in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). AOSP only permits using specific types of sockets throughout the OS. It only permits the dumpstate process used to create bug report zips to access AF_ALG sockets.

It includes an overview of the situation followed by the answers we provided to WIRED without any modifications. Anyone reading both the article and our answers can see our responses were barely used.

WIRED contacted us after the article was already written with a long series of questions focused on Donaldson's claims. Only a tiny portion of our responses were incorporated as side notes in the article. Donaldson's inaccurate claims are still largely presented unchallenged. It's immensely harmful.

It's not a true story. WIRED sourced an inaccurate history of GrapheneOS from a serial fabricator who has spent the past 8 years trying to destroy it and the life of the founder. Donaldson didn't play the role he claims in creating or supporting GrapheneOS. Copperhead was founded by 3 people, not 2.

Most of our users aren't active on these social media platforms and don't receive news about GrapheneOS beyond our release notes. Hundreds of thousands of people use it as a daily driver without closely following the project. We plan to reduce our dependence on these platforms.

Google is adding substantial additional friction to installing apps from unverified developers rather than removing the ability to do it. The main barrier is an initial 24 hour wait as part of enabling support for installing apps from unverified developers. None of this is applicable to GrapheneOS.

It isn't at all applicable to GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS is an open source project based on the Android Open Source Project so it's entirely up to us what we have in it. However, the change coming for Google Mobile Services operating systems doesn't remove the ability to install/run arbitrary apps.

WIRED (@wired.com) has gone ahead with publishing an extraordinarily inaccurate article about GrapheneOS. It presents a highly inaccurate history of the GrapheneOS project heavily based on fabrications from James Donaldson. WIRED failed to incorporate most of our responses to his inaccurate claims.

We've added a JSON API making it easier for services to permit GrapheneOS in addition to Google-certified operating systems: grapheneos.org/attestation.... grapheneos.org/attestation.... The verifiedBootKeys array lists GrapheneOS key fingerprints to permit via Android hardware attestation.

GrapheneOS doesn't persistently store notifications unless users explicitly enable notification history. For users enabling notification history, it's a 24 hour log that's cleared as soon as the feature is disabled again. This is the standard Android Open Source Project approach.

The editors of Wired (@wired.com) appear determined to turn an article about GrapheneOS into a hit piece. Wired contacted James Donaldson, CEO of Copperhead, and appears to be treating his thoroughly debunked fabrications about the history of the project as their primary source. This is outrageous.

/e/ and Murena have been been promoting their products by misleading people about GrapheneOS for years. This has turned into an all out war on GrapheneOS by their company and supporters. We began regularly debunking their inaccurate claims and they try to frame it as aggression.
