Therapy for anxiety has accidentally made anti-consumption much easier! When I feel panicky, my therapist and I practiced tolerating the feeling just for a little while, then checking in and seeing if I could tolerate it longer.

The rise of AI slop across all domains, including its disturbing (yet unsurprising) penetration into academia, comes with a nice twist for us who reject it: Having actual domain expertise, a deep understanding of a field, a firm grasp on a topic... These now seem like magic 🪄, like a superpower🦸.

My favorite method of scicomm😈 jokes that make people so curious they have to learn a little to fully appreciate the meme.

If you’re having eigenproblems I feel bad for you son, I’ve got 99 eigenvalues…but the residuals for my unconverged Ritz values are no long steadily decreasing so i need to restart my Lanczos algorithm with a new starting vector 😔

The problem with math education is that eeeeeveryone and their brother wants to make a video on how to calculate something sexy like a determinant, but AS SOON AS YOU want to learn about krylov subspaces there’s like one guy who made one video about it 10 years ago take it or leave it 🤨

The most fascinating applications of statistics are the ones where you have to creatively work around pragmatic constraints. E.g. quasi experimental methods.

Prompted by a new law, Kansas began sending letters to some trans people saying their drivers licenses were being invalidated until they change their gender information.

People are learning DS buzzwords instead of the concepts and how they relate 🤔 I’ve had convos with people who know certain things are “good ideas” (e.g. 80% statistical power, adding covariates to an analysis, using conjugate priors) but can’t explain WHY or when that idea breaks down

Look all I’m saying is that Cursor has access to a million lifetimes of knowledge, so the fact that *I* had to tell it how to incrementally try my code piece by piece to figure out where the error is coming from after it went in circles for 20 minutes trying to debug on its own….😒

I’m very anti-statisticians-naming-things in general but I will admit, I often use the phrase “as the name implies” when explaining things in statistics 🤔🤔 so it can’t be all bad E.g. “in MLE, as the name implies, we choose values for our parameters that maximize the likelihood of the data”

I need excel/Google Sheets to come out with a feature where you can easily indicate which cells have been checked/QA’d and then when the value of the cell changes it moves it to unchecked. And you can see who checked which cells when along with the regular edit history.

With non-data stakeholders, minimum detectable effects are easier to communicate than actual power %s, and are often more useful to empowering them to make decisions.
