I might be Emerald Fennelling here, but is The Stranger just about police violence moving from the lynching era and not understanding they have to be covert?

Two points about the downed F-15 crew in Iran: 1. Hegseth threatened āno quarterā against Iran, making the situation worse for those downed fliers. 2. Media speculation that the fliers could be used as āhostagesā is sloppy language. They'd be prisoners of war taken during combat. Not "hostages."

Means-testing also makes programs cost more than they would under a universal model, because so much money gets wasted on verification, surveillance, and compliance.

This article was designed to make me become the joker. When the NPT was signed, there were zero nuclear armed states outside of it. The fact that there are now almost as many states with nukes outside as inside is THE problem in non-proliferation rn and Israel is a full QUARTER of that problem.

NEW: Virginia lawmakers just passed a bill that'd forbid sheriffs and local police from contracting with ICE, if ICE doesn't say it'll follow state laws and agree to let its agents be prosecuted. Everyone seems to agree that'd spell the end of ICE contracts in Virginia:

Virginia Is Poised to Ban ICE Contracts, Unless the Feds Agree to Obey the Law. No One Expects Them to. - Bolts
A bill passed by lawmakers would not outright bar local contracts with ICE. But they could continue only if ICE accepts due process rules and state courts having power over its officers.
