Even tho little changed scene-to-scene, post-self-titled-game Shadow getting all of his deeper woundedness sanded off in Boom & the early IDW comics was immediately obvious to the fanbase bc of this. Shadow's a dick bc he has ambitions & goals driven by pain, not bc he's a megalomaniac like Vegeta!

The core of Good Edgy like Guts on the serious side & Shadow on the melodramatic side is that the bitterness & violence is coming from a place of pain, not raw sadism. It's not edginess or grimdarkness that sucks, it's pointlessness & wanton cruelty.
