BRL is extremely choppy at the best of times, and very difficult to trade with any precision. Someone may have front-run yesterday’s announcement, but the chart simply doesn’t provide conclusive evidence of that.

Hi. FX guy here. This may be a satisfying narrative (and no one is discounting Trump’s corruption) but if you glance at a longer time frame (really any time frame) you will see similar patterns over and over in BRL. Nothing about the chart tells us that someone shorted and exited in size yesterday.

People seem to be suggesting that the tariff exemption for smartphones is due to Tim Cook/Apple’s lobbying. I think the simpler explanation is that it’s just not feasible for the U.S. to put huge tariffs on something that will hobble one of its greatest companies and advantage non-U.S. rivals.
