i like making little web apps for myself/family/friends. the most annoying parts — the parts that drastically increase the scope, from "a bunch of HTML, CSS & JS files" to "a web server and database" — are auth+persistence. so i am very excited about atproto including a user-owned solution for both.

it's like how doing fictional racism is corrosive to your personality because it undermines the mental boundary of racism = bad and before you know it you're saying real slurs. it is in fact prosocial to say please and thank you to the computer even if you don't think they're alive

A little proof of concept I've been working on, it's a version of Bluesky that you can run locally, even on your laptop, that pulls just the data you care about from the firehose, indexes it, and provides you an interface to view and interact with posts.
