Based on the title you might think this piece would include some facts and data, but you would be wrong.

At a BBQ in Cambridge on Sunday someone asked where I had grown up, and when I said Boston, they said, "oh so you're not a transplant." Buddy if I had grown up in one Cambridge neighborhood and moved as an adult to an adjacent Cambridge neighborhood, some people would still call me a transplant.

Regardless what Councilor Flaherty may think, selling the single family home you live in for a massive profit is not displacement. Someone building an apartment building with affordable housing near you is not displacement! Words mean things.

Meanwhile Councillor Flaherty claims in a recent opinion piece that turning a $3m+ single family home into 56 apartments, 20% of which are subsidized and income-restricted in perpetuity, will displace middle-income families. We're supposed to take that seriously as a good faith argument?

Burhan is right. When there's no transparency around why and how popular bills die in committee despite no vocal opposition, we lose both the value of the legislation as well as the ability to hold our elected representatives accountable.

For years, the Boston area has let state capacity fall away as private industry did a lot of heavy lifting on making things happen, both good and bad. Now, as we're facing a downturn, we need to revitalize our ability to dream big, and push for better. I'm proud to be supporting Burhan for that.

The idea that a road's usefulness depends on its connection to other roads, to a network of roads, is pretty intuitive, but switch up the mode & it can be a struggle. Cambridge's explicit commitment to building a safe network of physically separated bike lanes (the CSO) is under-celebrated imo.

The Multifamily Zoning Ordinance (MZO), which eliminated exclusionary zoning in Cambridge, passed 8-1 last term after months of public deliberation. A more aggressive version could likely have passed with a tighter margin, but councilors in the pro-housing majority saw value in compromise.

Public comment (in person > online > email) opposing the Zusy/Flaherty proposal today would be helpful! Adoption of any one element would strangle multifamily housing production, including mixed income inclusionary housing and social housing.

The AHO made most new 100% affordable devs legal to build by right, so advocates no longer need to turn out in force each & every time. Of course the meetings are again dominated by people unhappy w/the dev. Those thrilled about new affordable homes will be very underrepresented, & that's okay.

They are absolutely coming for affordable housing too.
