i mean what are these "western values" these guys are so hopped up about? they are directly antagonistic to western europe. they don't believe in civil liberties. they reject democracy. and don't get me started on christianity, they hate their white neighbors almost as much as the brown ones

To my mind, I think the core of the problem is that greater - if still imperfect - gender equality allowed women access to more 'life scripts' as it were, but society mostly still presents men with just one script and that script poorly and incompletely. So some men are fine and many are adrift.

I'm really curious to what extent this is a function of individualized identity formation. I get the sense identity is now less tied to what you do for work, which was an essential part of unions and working class organization and engagement.

Coming more around to a theory I’ve had for a while that the rural, broadly, need to Search Their Feelings in that they know, down deep, that it sucks. Why can’t urban people criticize rural people? Bc it’s interpreted as punching down. Why is it punching down, exactly? We know why. They know why.

Unironically they should buy up the domains for about 60 defunct local newspapers in swing states. Hire two reporters to write almost exclusively about highschool sports and new restaurants opening with every 10th article about how the local GOP is screwing over people.
