I don't have any special insight, but if I had to guess I'd say that the Chief Pretendgineer probably had them push the engines too hard to meet the overall ascent performance requirements and make the design close.

I think the Luce is more interesting than beautiful, but the real problem is the price. At $250k this would still be as expensive as hell for most people, but in a world of 911 Turbos and Bentleys and Sapphires, you could see it as reasonable for a Ferrari. At $650k+options, the price is insane.
