9/n And what mission would justify spending 10s of billions of dollars, and placing 10s of thousands of US troops in jeopardy, by re-taking #Bagram? Having an airbase close to #China? PRC strategists would LOVE to see so many US troops placed in such a vulnerable position.

8/n One of hidden costs of #Afghanistan war was the need to constantly buy off every nation whose airspace was needed to resupply US troops: The more troops deployed to Afghanistan, the more logistical hostages. US aid to Pakistan totaled 10s of billions of dollars. I helped authorize much of it.

6/n If US re-took #Bagram and did NOT pay the Taliban to protect and permit resupply: ♦️It would require thousands-- probably tens of thousands-- of US troops (or contractors) purely as force-protection. That's in addition to all the troops stationed there for any actual mission.

3/n Here's what the area outside #Bagram looked like the first time I was there, a few weeks after the US assumed control. The last time I was there, about a decade later, this view hadn't much changed: Everywhere outside the wire was littered with mines, destroyed tanks, and unexploded ordnance.
