Long story short, loricariid (suckermouth) catfishes living in fast flowing, rocky rivers have thick, collagenous lips compared to those in slow-flowing, muddy rivers, which helps them hold under the flow. Sometimes, art can lead to science instead of the other way around… #SciComm

This project had absolutely nothing related to any of the research I was doing at the time during my PhD (or even now), but sometimes a research question comes so naturally, like “why won’t the lips clear?” that you can’t resist finding out the answer (with the help of collaborators)…

Sometimes, you don’t plan on doing science and science finds you! When my pet plecos died of natural causes, I was learning how to clear & stain fish for histology, so used these for practice to make art. I noticed something weird about their mouths, tho, and this paper was the result of that… 🐟 🐡

The Triassic was a time of weird reptiles of every description. This is one of the more recent finds: Mirasaura from France. It's one of the drepanosaurs, an odd group of arboreal reptiles with superficially bird-like heads and, in some cases, equally superficially feather-like appendages.

Day 29 - Foresight. Elasmobranchs (including sharks, rays, and skates) includes species that can either give live birth or lay beautiful egg cases of varying shapes. Depositing them in secluded locations so the foreseeable next generation hatches safely. #sciartseptember

For foresight, I recently read “The Life and Death of the Great Lakes” and found it a little depressing that even the best efforts to keep the mussels from being moved to other inland lakes they still made it there 🥲 #SciArtSeptember

Another post for #SciArtSeptember day 28: A plate from Kunstformen der Natur by Ernst Haeckel depicting Acantharea species and their strontium sulfate skeletons. They look huge here, but in reality are tiny marine microplankton ranging from 0.2 to a couple of millimeters in diameter. 🐡

For harvest, the most harvested fish in Michigan is the Lake Whitefish. If you drive through the UP you’ll see lots of signage about places to purchase these guys either fresh or smoked. Unfortunately, they’re currently in decline #SundayFishSketch #SciArtSeptember
