In authoritarian crackdowns, it’s important to randomly ensnare some people whom one would think would be safe, so that everyone is at least a little bit afraid that something could happen to them. The regime scales up its power of intimidation over a much larger group than those directly affected.

DC has never felt like a war zone until now. Helicopters circling at night, troops on the street while running errands, people in fear of just existing out on the street because they might get stopped by power-drunk officers. THIS is the America Trump is creating.

Two things can be true: 1) The President has legal authority over the D.C. police and the D.C. National Guard that he doesn't have *anywhere else* in the country; & 2) Even if this doesn't set a legal precedent, it sets an ominous *political* precedent for pretextually overriding local government.

I do need the record to reflect that no one in DC wants this. No one in DC has asked for this. I live in DC. I work in DC. I go out in DC. I feel safe, I don’t feel threatened by crime. I will feel threatened by Trump’s troops.

As a reminder: Trump’s first act was to pardon HUNDREDS of J6 rioters who assaulted and beat DC police officers. Trump’s been responsible for a large percentage of the total assaults (and many of the worst/most brutal) on DC police in the last decade.

Trump would have you believe that our city is terrifying. I just had the most lovely weekend enjoying our beautiful DC with 0 fear because violent crime is at a 30-year low. Do not believe his lies. The deployment of the National Guard & federalization of MPD is a gross misuse of power & resources.
