Important stuff from
@katjadiehl.bsky.social
, linking children’s exclusion from their streets to both car-centrism and adultism (which are of course connected): “how deeply adultism is ingrained in our cities — and how it robs children of what they need most: freedom, movement and self-efficacy”

We underestimate children’s abilities to bike their own bike for transportation because our infrastructure doesn’t work for children. My daughter can easily bike over 5 miles, which is around the distance of many errands, but my fear of her safety holds us back from taking those trips.

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved public transit, not only did it TRANSFORM the city’s public life and economic success, but the car traffic got better. The car traffic got BETTER.

People often cite hair as a reason to not like wearing helmets. As it’s not really a choice for my children, and one of them likes to have beautiful smooth hair, we needed a solution for helmets. We found that using a silk scarf under the helmet really makes a big difference!

Can’t help but find this irritating. ‘For the whole community’ is a dog-whistle to some pretty nasty individuals who fought hard to stop real change here. It isn’t ‘for the whole community’- they kept 8000 vehicles/day & chose to exclude children & people wanting to travel safely on bicycles

Whiston Road (2016) is the exact approach advocated by SEJ, John Stewart etc in alternative to LTNs. “Taming” roads with superficial changes. A few years after this scheme, Gao Gao was killed on Whiston Road her bike. Don’t buy their snakeoil.
