Writing my lecture notes, I learned that Galilei not only claimed that the Milky Way was made up of separate stars (which it is). He went on to claim he was able to resolve basically everything astronomy called "nebulae" into separate stars. And that just can't be right. Surely they knew M31. 🧪🔭

An edge-on disk galaxy, observed with the Apache Point 2.5m Telescope in the SDSS survey. It is at redshift 0.028 (lookback time 397.0 million years) with coordinates (163.56033, 21.13258). 45 volunteers classified this galaxy in Galaxy Zoo 2.
